Thornhill Park Amenity
Thornhill Park continues to take shape as the team works hard on-site to deliver residential stages and surrounding amenity for the Thornhill Park community.
The below provides guidance for some of the frequently asked questions about established and future amenity at Thornhill Park.
Thornhill Park Wetlands and Waterways
To date, Wel.Co has constructed and landscaped over 2 hectares of wetlands with accompanying walking and cycling trails for the Thornhill Park community to enjoy.
Landscaping of all remaining wetlands and waterways will commence in the second half of 2021, with the beautification of wetlands and waterways adjacent to Stages 16-19 and Stages 24-28.
Civil works are complete with white matting currently stabilising the edges of the waterways and wetlands.
Landscaping of these waterways and wetlands will be both functional and aesthetic. Aquatic vegetation will assist with the filtration of stormwater which runs off roads and roofs. Grassed areas, seating, shelters and BBQ facilities will provide a perfect backdrop for residents to have a picnic or read a book overlooking more than 20ha of waterways and wetlands.
Expected delivery: 2023
Thornhill Park will benefit from numerous parks and green spaces throughout the community.
To date Wiltshire Park has been completed and nearly 8,000m2 of grass, trees, playground equipment, shelters and BBQ facilities have been completed throughout the project.
A number of parks are currently under construction with more updates to come.
Stage 17 Park
The Stage 17 park is tracking well with custom concrete works for some of the major play pieces underway, the water fountain is now connected, shelter structures are installed and majority of the grassing and planting is complete.
Expected delivery: Spring 2021
New Primary School Coming to Thornhill Park
The Victorian Government has announced plans for a new primary school at Thornhill Park, due to open in 2023. Announced as part of the Government’s 2021-22 State Budget, the Rockbank Murray Road Primary School (interim name) will cater for up to 525 local students and will help to meet the needs of the growing Melton population.
Further information is available on the Victorian School Building Authority website
Further Schools & Sporting Fields
Land for a further private primary school has been set aside with negotiations underway with private stakeholders for the acquisition of this site.
Land has been set aside for sporting fields as part of Stage 19, with Melton City Council to determine when these fields will be delivered.
Aspire Early Education and Kindergarten at Thornhill Park
Construction is well progressed on the Aspire Early Education and Kindergarten at Thornhill Park. The build is now at brick stage with roofing to commence on site next month.
Expected delivery: Late 2021
At the heart of Thornhill Park will be a convenience retail centre, expected to contain a mini-mart for those last-minute groceries, a cafe for coffee on the go and other local shops to make living in the Thornhill Park community an even more convenient choice.
Planning for this precinct is underway with a private developer and we look forward to sharing further updates on the evolving plans for this site.
Thornhill Park train station
There has been land set aside under the Paynes Road PSP and Toolern PSP (via a Land Use Amendment). Transport for Victoria (TfV) and the Department of Transport (DoT) has advised this land will be required for the future purpose of a train station.
Any enquiries regarding the construction of the train station can be directed to phone 03 9655 6666.
Cobblebank Train Station and Ballarat Train Line Upgrades
The Ballarat Line Upgrade is an ongoing investment by the Victorian State Government to upgrade from a single regional diesel V/Line to a metropolitan service with twin electrified tracks.
The first stage of this upgrade is now complete. All rail crossings have been upgraded with sealed roads, pedestrian and shared path crossings as well as the latest safety features. The State Government is yet to announce further upgrades to deliver grade-separated tracks.
As part of this upgrade, the new Cobblebank Train Station was opened December 2019, providing a much-needed additional train station for the growing Melton corridor. Find out more by visiting the Big Build Vic website.

Western Freeway / Paynes Road / Mount Cottrell Road / Diamond Interchanges
To date, Wel.Co has spent over $8 million upgrading Mount Cottrell Road and Paynes Road with kerb, asphalt, line marking and traffic signals. Land is set aside in the north-east and north-west corners of the Thornhill Park project for the Diamond Interchange upgrade.
Population growth and traffic demand is being monitored by VicRoads, ultimately dictating when these works will be triggered for an upgrade. Any enquiries regarding the upgrade can be directed to phone 13 11 71.
Mount Cottrell Rd Upgrade
Significant infrastructure upgrades are underway on Mount Cottrell Road, with Wel.Co-coordinating the delivery of works to improve the connectivity and transport amenity for the Thornhill Park community.
With an upfront investment of more than $7 million, these capital works will deliver a fully sealed Mount Cottrell Road from the Western Freeway all the way down to our sister project, Key West. This upgraded road will be wider and smoother than the existing clay surface, with asphalt, drainage, kerbing and set-back shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists. It will be safer for all road users within and adjacent to Thornhill Park.
Pedestrians will also benefit from the new street lighting throughout as well as two sets of traffic signals; one at the intersection of Alfred Road and Mount Cottrell Road, the second at the intersection of Baxterpark Drive and Mount Cottrell Road. The road reserve will be enhanced with extensive landscaping and tree planting.
New Public Hospital Coming to Melton
In exciting news for Melbourne’s western growth corridor, Melton will soon be home to a brand new public hospital.
With the acquisition of the land progressing well, a business case for the hospital is due to be completed by the end of the year.
This is an exciting development for the Thornhill Park community, and Melbourne’s West as a whole, with the availability of a public hospital within close proximity just another reason to feel at home in Thornhill Park.
