Did you know Thornhill Park is within close proximity to some of Victoria’s best wineries? Save yourself the trip all the way to the Yarra Valley and check out some local grapes instead. We’ve taken the hard work out of it and put together a wine-lovers guide of the Western region for you:
First up we have Galli, a beautiful estate with an environmental conscious. Galli embraces the principles of organic viticulture through the use of fertigation, natural fertilizers and minimal spraying across both their vineyards. They’ve established techniques that reduce the environmental impact on the land around them, like using 100% recycled water for the Sunbury vineyard. Never tasted grapes from a sustainable vineyard before? Well Galli wines have won 14 award in three years, not a bad drop!
The estate’s Cellar Door gives visitors a chance to experience the impressive range of wines with the help of welcoming and knowledgeable staff on hand. The combination of the rich red volcanic soils of Sunbury and generations of Tuscan Galli winemakers must be doing something right.
Galli Estate Winery Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday to tempt the palate after your sampling at the Cellar Door.
The famed Witchmount Winery exports award-winning wines all over the world. With 65 acres under vine, Witchmount grow Shiraz, Cabernet, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Barbera and Tempranillo.
Witchmount Estate became a must-visit after winning the 2008 Syrah Du Monde wine competition held in France. Their 2004 Estate Shiraz was named the top Shiraz in the world.
Being only 30 minutes drive from Melbourne, the Avanti restaurant on the estate is the perfect option for a relaxed Sunday lunch with family and friends or a quick bite on your way home from work!
Toolern Vale Hills
From hard labour in a small vineyard in Kithra, Greece, to twenty hectares of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and their flagship Merlot in Victoria – the history of Toolern Vale Hills has always been driven by passion.
The location of the winery plays a huge role in the flavor of these distinctive and sophisticated wines. The ancient basalt soils, cooler temperatures in the evenings, and the fact that all wines are made with minimal intervention (red wines are made with no filtering or finning) makes for an unforgettable result.
The cellar door is open by appointment only.
Bacchus Hill Winery
Not even 20 minutes away from Thornhill Park you’ll find the award-winning Bacchus Hill Winery, with picturesque views of the Brisbane Ranges and the Macedon Ranges. The 2006 Shiraz has taken home awards at Cowra, Bathurst and Ballarat wine shows, a palate pleaser for many a wine lover.
Renowned not only for its wine but also for its vast array of home grown fresh produce, Bacchus Hill offers something for everyone. They grow their own olives, apples, plums, apricots, prickly pears, tomatoes, capsicum, beans, potatoes, herbs, zucchinis, pumpkins and other seasonal produce. You can even pick your own olives and prickly pears. A great family day out!
